Solex enters Australian SOP market
Application of cooling technology showcases Solex experience in potash applications
Solex Thermal Science is excited to bring its decades of global experience in potash cooling to a new collaboration with SO4 on what will be Australia’s first sulphate of potash (SOP) mine.
As part of the landmark agreement, Solex is designing and manufacturing a state-of-the-art SOP cooling system at SO4’s potash mine in Western Australia. The cooling system will help ensure the 245,000 tonnes per year of SOP produced by SO4 remains free flowing during the journey from production facility to farmers’ fields.
SOP is a premium fertilizer that provides plants with the potassium they need for growth. Unlike muriate of potash, SOP is nearly free of chlorides, making it more amenable to vegetable and fruit crops.
“The fertilizer industry’s aggressive pursuit of environmental, stewardship and governance (ESG) best practices have created increased demand for greener and more organic alternatives such as SOP,” says Solex Thermal Science CEO Lowy Gunnewiek.
“Our energy- and water-efficient cooling technology solutions align with those best practices in being near-carbon neutral, while also ideally suited for remote operations in arid environments and ensuring fertilizer producers can achieve the cooling they need while minimizing plant utility requirements.”

The company’s potash cooling technology has easily handled everything from potassium nitrate to potassium chloride and potassium sulphate, with installations in North America, Europe, Asia, and with, the success of this project, Australia.
