Innovation launches Solex into battery material market

Canadian-headquartered company announces recent applications of patented cooling technology

Solex Thermal Science, a pioneer in bulk solids heat exchange technology, is accelerating its innovative work in the heating, cooling and drying of free-flowing granular materials with its recent expansion into the lithium ion battery market.

The Canadian-headquartered company has confirmed two separate sales of its patented industrial heat exchanger technology for the cooling of materials that are most commonly used in the production of batteries for electric vehicles.

“It is exciting for Solex to be able to play a role in this rapidly growing market,” says Lowy Gunnewiek, CEO of Solex Thermal Science. “We are proud of our role as innovators in the indirect heating, cooling and drying of granular particles, so it is always satisfying to be able to support innovators in other industries.”

The lithium ion battery market is expanding rapidly, with 85 large-scale manufacturing facilities already operational around the globe and an additional 82 expected to come online within the next several years. These manufacturers are investing in and working hard to meet the rapidly growing demand for energy storage from the electric vehicle market, as well as accelerated applications within the grid storage industry.

Modern batteries require granular solids that are highly pure, mixed uniformly and with a specific particle shape and size. In addition, these materials are highly valuable, owing to the rarity of the component materials – for example, cobalt, nickel and lithium.

Solex Thermal Science’s plate-based heat exchanger technology provides the ability to accurately manage the temperature of battery materials during different steps of the production process while avoiding contamination, attrition, segregation of mixtures and loss of material to the atmosphere or plant environment.

We’ve found that many of the lessons we’ve learned from work in highly demanding industries and applications are providing a great foundation for our work with battery materials,” says Albert Bedell, Regional Director, Asia Pacific for Solex Thermal Science.

Its great to know that we’re able to help manufacturers overcome some of the many challenges they are facing as they try to achieve the highest possible quality in their rapidly expanding manufacturing processes.

Solex Thermal Science is the global market leader and developer of high-efficiency, indirect heat exchange technology for the heating, cooling and drying of solid granules, pellets, beans, seeds and particles.

Over the past 30 years, the Canadian-headquartered company has installed more than 900 advanced heat exchangers in more than 50 countries worldwide with applications such as fertilizer, oilseeds, sugar and industrial materials.
