Solex presents at 74th World Foundry Congress
Highlights include opportunities for lower scrap rates, reduced emissions/costs during sand conditioning
BUSAN, South Korea – Solex Thermal Science was honoured today to join members of the global casting community at the 74th World Foundry Congress and contribute to the collective technical innovation happening across the industry.
Albert Bedell, Regional Director, Asia Pacific for Solex Thermal Science, took the stage this afternoon at Exhibition Centre 2 of the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO) in Busan, South Korea to discuss “Accurate Foundry Sand Conditioning Using Moving Bed Heat Exchangers.”
Topics covered during the presentation included an overview of the traditional challenges facing metalcasters looking to control sand temperature during the casting process, such as:
- High scrap rates and binder usage due to poor sand temperature control
- Batch process challenges temperature control
- Stringent dust rules
- Aging sand systems need upgrading to meet higher production
- Energy and maintenance costs are driving casting costs
Bedell identified vertical plate MBHEs as a temperature-controlled sand conditioning system that can ensure core sand temperature can be controlled within 1°F, thereby reducing scrap rates and binder usage. This drastically improves on many current “direct-contact” conditioning technologies where sand temperatures that may vary by as much as 20°F.
In addition, Bedell noted that these types of heat exchangers condition foundry sand through a stacked-plate design that relies on conduction (e.g., indirect) instead of convection (e.g., direct. Since air is not used and the required heat transfer is realized within a gravity-fed layout, the system does not require energy-intensive air handling systems. As well, since the foundry sand is not in direct contact with the heat transfer media, it’s not subject to degradation and thereby minimizes the spread of crystalline silica dust.
Solex would like to thank the organizers of the 74th World Foundry Congress for the opportunity to share our expertise in thermal and bulk materials engineering.
